Hi there - it's me, Julia

Welcome to my little corner of the internet - I'm happy you're here!

I got interested in photography as an undergraduate studying a year abroad. At the time, the fancy digital SLRs with all the cool features (if they even existed) weren’t available to me. Instead, before I left for my year abroad, my dad gave me his manual SLR that he had gotten in the 1970’s and that he had used for a long time. He might have explained it to me briefly, I don’t remember. It still worked and it worked great! With a very steady hand (I didn’t have a tripod back then) and an eye for image composition (my mom was an art teacher), I started capturing landscapes and interesting details of my surroundings.

I remember writing down variables like f-stop, exposure times, ISO values etc. for the pictures I took because in those days it usually took several weeks from taking a picture to developing the film and seeing the result. That was about 20 years ago. Since then, I have moved and lived and worked in different countries and places and my love for photography was always my steady companion. In the past 10 years I started decorating my home with my photographs and while I always loved them, I never dared to actually “go big”.

Going big meaning getting a sizeable canvas print developed from my pictures. Once I did, and I bought 4 of them at once, I realized how much it elevated the atmosphere of my home. When friends came to visit, they loved the canvases without knowing that they picture photographs I had taken. Also, over the past few years I became a little sad knowing that I had thousands and thousands of pictures on my hard drive, that would besides the occasional display in my apartment, never see the light of day. So here they are. Some of my best pieces. Go check them out on Etsy. I sincerely hope that you enjoy them as much as I do.

And while I've loved photography for most of my life, I am also more than just a hobby photographer. Granted, I'm a pretty complex person. ;)

I'm a scientist developing scientific software by day and wear a bunch of other hats the rest of the time. Dog mom (yes, that little guy => is my marketing expert), business owner, landlord, scientific consultant, leader and mentor are some of them. This also means that throughout my life and my job, I constantly had to change, adapt and learn a ton of really useful life and leadership skills.

I've lived in 3 countries on 2 continents and moved 16x in my life. I'm an expert traveler. I know how to deal with stuff. At the same time, because I do so much, I need to be organized, productive and have a "no bullshit" policy. People come to me for advice all the time and I love teaching people what I know. I hope that some of the things on my website or in my shop will be useful also for you and that we can travel that road together.

If there is anything you'd like to see or have questions about, please drop me a line. I'd love to hear from you.
